Celebrating 25 Years of Dedication: Nicola, Our Head of Housekeeping

This year, we proudly celebrate an incredible milestone for one of our longest-serving and most dedicated team members, Nicola, our Head of Housekeeping, who marks an amazing 25 years at the Derby Conference Centre.

Nicola’s journey began back in the days when the centre was known as Catalis Rail Training. She remembers her very first shift vividly: a short three-hour stint with no training, just a set of rooms and a deadline. “I honestly thought I’d never get them done in time,” she recalls. “I dreaded every shift for a long time, if I’m honest.” But Nicola powered through with the quiet determination that has defined her career ever since.

She stayed not just because of the work, but because of the people. “The team here became my second family,” she says. “It’s the people who’ve kept me going all these years.”

Over the past quarter-century, Nicola has witnessed dramatic changes at DCC. “When I started, you could still smoke in the bedrooms,” she laughs. “Now, even thinking about that seems bizarre. I remember the smell of flowers as you walked up the drive, and you could play pool in the room that’s now our restaurant.”

She’s seen the building undergo a full refurbishment, transforming into the vibrant, modern venue it is today. And she’s been an active part of that transformation too. From painting the bar area, to designing themed bedrooms (including a beach room and an art deco suite), Nicola has worn many hats over the years. “I’ve definitely been a bit of a jack-of-all-trades,” she says with a grin.

One proud moment that stands out for Nicola was being asked to lead the housekeeping department, something she still considers a big personal achievement. She was also the first recipient of DCC’s Employee of the Year award, a recognition that meant the world to her.

Nicola’s festive spirit is also legendary at DCC. What started as a reluctant task, putting up Christmas decorations, has become a cherished tradition she continues to this day. “I didn’t really want to do it at first,” she laughs, “but here I am, still decorating the trees every year.”

Among the many events she’s supported, the Bowmer and Kirkland event stands out as the most memorable. “I walked 45,000 steps that day and got home at 5am,” she remembers. “But what a day. What a night. I loved every minute of it.”

Reflecting on her time at DCC, Nicola says, “If you choose to work in hospitality, you’ve got to be ready to work hard, but you also need a good sense of humour, especially here!”

To Nicola, 25 years feels like a blink. “Wow… where does the time go?” she muses. As for how she’ll celebrate? “Not sure yet,” she smiles. “But I’ll think of something.”
