It is March – When did that happen?!

Storms has been battled, restrictions have been lifted and it is officially spring. With a new calendar month comes our second issue of our wedding blog – YAY!

This month I thought I would tell you all a little about myself, because in my opinion personality is key when planning a wedding, so stick around and get to know me just a little better.

At this very moment I am sitting on a plane on my way to Denmark for a mini break. And why am I telling you this? Because Denmark is where it all started. Those of you that have met me, will already know I have a “hard to define” accent. This is because I am Danish with all of my family still there. Throw in 4 years of living in Glasgow – Scotland, 6 months in Derby and heavy influence from international movies and music – and you get my accent 😉

One of my favourite times of year is Christmas, so in true “A Christmas Carol” style I will carry with my journey to becoming you wedding coordinator at The Derby Conference Centre.

The Past…

Growing up I wanted to be all sorts of things. I mean I really went through a lot of career aspirations! The only thing that really always stayed the same was my natural ability to organise and plan everything in mine, my family’s and my friend’s lives. Around the age of 10 I watched The Wedding Planner and I thought “You can do as a job?? – that is PERFECT!”. For as long as I can remember I have loved love and for years I have categorised myself as a hopeless romantic, so when I released you could plan weddings for a living, it was like destiny. At the age of 10, I did not know what it would even mean to be a wedding planner, I just knew it looked like the most amazing way to spend you days, so I was hooked.

A few years later when I was career planning as part of school, I was looking for the best way to get into the industry. I knew 3 things for certain – I wanted to go to university, I wanted to go abroad and the opportunities in Denmark at the time was limited and highly competitive. So, I started looking at universities abroad with an events management degree – that landed me in Glasgow in 2016 graduating in the middle of the first lockdown.

The start to my career was not at all what I expected! Jobs were limited and competition was fierce with the wedding and events industry struggling to survive. On top of that, I was an EU citizen in a country that had just left the EU with limited guidance for employers hiring EU citizens. So, I left. I went back to Denmark to ride out the pandemic with the best intentions of moving back to the UK when the storm had passed. Which takes us to…

The present…

The Derby Conference Centre. After a year in Denmark surrounded by my family and friends, I took on a new role in Derby. Joining the team at The Derby Conference Centre is a fantastic experience and I absolutely LOVE planning all your weddings.

A day in my life as the Wedding Coordinator at The Derby Conference Centre – becoming a popular wedding venue in Derby and Derbyshire – can have many different elements. On top of responding to enquiries from recently engaged couples, I meet with my couples regularly for a catch up on their day. We talk about everything from running order of the day, venue décor and themes to menus and music choice. I arrange wedding menu tastings, which for all of our 2023 onwards couples, are included in all packages.

We are connected to great suppliers and continue to expand our list of preferred suppliers so we can source anything for our couples. If you are getting married and looking for a venue with all-inclusive packages, look no further!

The thing I love most about my role as your wedding coordinator, is the contact I have with each couple and the trust they put in me to create their special day just how they envision it.

All wedding professionals have their own favourite moments from a wedding day, and I wanted to share my top 5 favourite moments with you all.

• The calm before the storm. I love doing a walk-through of the ceremony, breakfast and evening rooms and triple check they are ready for the couple and all their guests.
• The look of the partner standing at the top of the aisle waiting for their partner to come through those doors and walk towards them
• Your family and cultural traditions. Being from Denmark we have lots of wedding specific traditions and I personally believe embracing traditions on your wedding day adds a whole different touch.
• Memory tables – it has been a tough couple of years for everyone and more and more couples are adding memory tables to their day as a remembrance to the loved ones that cannot attend their day. It always brings me to tears but it is such a lovely element to add to your day.
• The first dance – need I say more?

The Future…

While it is true no one knows what the future holds, I have big plans for my career as a wedding professional. The Derby Conference Centre is a gorgeous venue full of character with amazing grounds to take all your pictures – I mean have you seen the staircase? Or the bench outside? I am very much looking forward to promoting the DCC as a wedding venue and get them the reputation of THE go-to venue in Derby.

Fingers crossed, one day I will be joining the other side and plan my own wedding but for now I am all about you and your day. Okay who are we kidding? I have been planning my own perfect day for years so good luck to Mr. Right when he comes along and wants a say.
