2021: A year in review...
Welcome to my first Catch up with Matthew Hutchings. As Managing Director of the Derby Conference Centre, here is the latest news from the DCC.
I have looked back over the past year and reflected on the whirlwind that was 2021. The last six months of 2021 saw a positive recovery for the Hospitality sector and the DCC, with the boom of the August & September staycation and the return of weddings, live events, and Christmas Party Nights.
We had some beautiful weddings over the year, with many of our couples having postponed their weddings for more than 2 years, it was amazing to see so many happy couples as they start the rest of their lives together.

Although the new variant impacted the last week of our festive nights with over 60% cancellations, it was amazing to see so many people enjoying a social event after another disruptive year. Although it was a shame people cancelled, this did mean we were able to donate our excess food to the YMCA, we hope they enjoyed a fantastic Christmas meal.

Despite the pandemic, I felt it was important to continue supporting local charities. Our chosen charity for 2021/2022 is me&dee. We continued with multiple fundraising activities throughout including a charity golf day and Christmas Jumper Day. I am so privileged to say that in 2021 I became a trustee of me&dee, which I have thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to continuing my support with them.
The Conference Centre has remained a COVID Secure venue, offering a continued high standard with our team providing a safe environment for client meetings. We have been able to accommodate social distancing needs in our Covid Secure Venue, with hand sanitising stations around the whole venue, and meeting rooms with ventilation.
We were proud to provide the DCC to the St John’s Ambulance for their training in delivering the vaccination role out.
We continue to be ‘Good to Go’ and ‘AiM Secure Accredited’ which highlights our dedication to offering an environment that is healthy and hygienic, as well as our commitment to do the very best for both our customers and staff. I am also happy to share that we are now travel proud certified! This certification highlights that we are committed to offering inclusive hospitality for our LGBTQ+ guests. Everyone is welcome and free to be themselves at the DCC, no matter who they are or who they love.

For 2022, I do expect that the first few months will be challenging, with the gradual return of people to offices and meetings now that working from home has been lifted. We have an exciting year of events coming up, with our popular comedy club, tribute nights, wedding fayres, psychic night, and even more to come, so watch this space!
